Lord Shiva blessed them with a son. But their son did not have a long life. Saint Mukund was very happy about the birth of his son. Saint Mukund named him Markandeya. Concerned about his father’s tension, Markandeya asked him about it. Saint Mukund explained to him that he did not have a long life. Markandeya asked his father not to worry as he believed that he would be able to get a long life due to his devotion to Lord Shiva.
The boy started worshipping Shiva Linga regularly and also read Mrityunjaya stotram. As the boy lived his life, Yamraj visited him. The boy refused to go with him. He embraced the Shiva Linga. Lord Shiva appeared and stopped Yamraj from taking the boy’s life. Yamraj accepted his defeat and left. Lord Shiva blessed Markandeya with life till eternity. Lord Shiva declared that worshipping the Maha Mrityunjaya yantra would save one from death and disease.
